When Traditional Dentures May Be the Best Option for Replacing Missing Teeth
Dentures have been around for centuries as a way to replace lost teeth. This might not be the right solution in every case, but there are times when it makes sense. If you are missing teeth, you may feel embarrassed about your appearance. It is probably difficult to eat, and your speech may even be affected. Your dentist can help you know whether you are a good candidate for this treatment.
A look at dentures and what they do
There are different types of this appliance, but the purpose is generally the same: to replace teeth. Dentures provide a person who has many missing teeth or no remaining teeth with the ability to chew again. This apparatus eliminates gaps in the mouth, giving the person a full smile again. It comes in either permanent or removable form. There are also full and partial appliances.
Permanent dentures attach to dental implants or cement in place to the mouth with a metal framework. Removable ones rest on the gum. The device consists of a gum-colored acrylic base and artificial teeth. The teeth are made of ceramic, porcelain, or metal covered in plastic. The patient must regularly clean the appliance to help it last and work well.
When the patient wants a less invasive procedure
Traditional dentures are the type that fits over the gums with the help of adhesive. To fit the patient with a set, the dentist will take X-rays and make impressions of the mouth. This allows the dentist or a technician to create an appliance that fits properly and comfortably. The dentist may have to remove teeth that are severely diseased or damaged. But the process is minimally invasive. Contrast this with other teeth-replacement methods that require multiple surgeries and months of recovery.
When the patient wants an option that is not difficult to clean or maintain
One of the nice aspects of traditional removable dentures is that the person can clean them well. An individual can take them out after meals and rinse them off. This removes food particles and other debris, preventing bacteria growth. It is also wise to take out the appliance before going to bed at night.
By doing this, the person can soak the apparatus in a solution overnight. Regular cleaning will extend the life of the device. It can be more difficult to keep other types of dentures clean. This can lead to infections in the mouth and deterioration of the denture base or teeth.
When finances are a concern
Teeth-replacement methods can require a significant financial commitment. Dental insurance may or may not cover certain procedures. This will depend on the reason for the procedure and the patient’s needs. Bear in mind that dentures will not cost as much as other options.
